GIS section help | screen shots

GIS section of TAXIS is responsible for handling geographic data (supported formats). The basic idea behind the implementation of GIS features in TAXIS is to facilitate the work for researchers dealing simultaneously with biological and geographic data. TAXIS provides a way to link taxonomic database entities and geographic maps in one application. Creating distribution maps is possible without leaving TAXIS and using the familiar tools available in other GIS applications. Samples can be plotted on the map on-the-fly while browsing through specimen data or taxonomic data plotting all specimen records for selected taxon. Handling of vector maps is organized in the same way as in popular GIS applications. Vector and raster files can be loaded as map layers. View properties can be adjusted for each layer and the whole map view can be saved and opened later. Built-in full featured editor allows creating and editing of vector layers without leaving TAXIS but in the same time retaining the compatibility with other GIS applications.

What can I record here?

  • Create and edit vector maps
  • Create taxa distribution maps saved as vector maps and attached to taxa
  • Plot samples
  • Pin-point the coordinates on the map and record them to selected sample (specimen) with one click
  • Click here for details in TAXIS Help

What can I view here?

  • You can actually use GIS module a stand-alone GIS viewer/editor program independent of the rest of the data
  • Load vector and raster maps
  • Adjust view parameters for individual layers
  • Save map view as a project retaining all the setting for all layers
  • Quivery individual layers
  • Charts based on metadata
  • Automatic labeling with "smart" positioning
  • View and edit metadata (also, add/delete fields)
  • Samples for selected taxon
  • References for selected taxon and synonym
  • Save current view as seen on screen to image file (JPEG or TIFF) that is already georeferenced ("world" file) and ready to be used as a map layer in a GIS application.
  • Import existing distribution layers for taxa
  • Export vector layer to shape file (in its current state)
  • Click here for details in TAXIS Help

What else can I do with it?
